Markets kept their cool on Monday amid a fast-moving and volatile geopolitical landscape in the Middle East — but the longer-term risk premium has likely risen, while oil prices remain on edge, analysts said. Iran said it was acting in self-defense in response to a strike on its diplomatic compound in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month. By Monday, global players including the U.S. and European leaders were seeking to cool tensions, urging Israel to show restraint in its response. Sinha nevertheless added that "the fact that we moved from a proxy confrontation to a direct confrontation, even though that de-escalates in the near term, the longer term risk premium probably goes up." "I think the FX market ultimately will take its cue from oil prices because ultimately, that's the channel through which it spills over to the FX market," he said.

A new study suggests that healthcare workers use their panic buttons more frequently during a full moon, according to an analysis by Canopy, a hospital safety company. Regardless of the phase of the moon, healthcare workers have always faced a greater degree of workplace violence and, in recent years, it has only gotten worse. Surveys among nurses and physicians have reported significant increases in rates of violence toward healthcare workers since 2018.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. That reference to Election Day is perhaps the only line in Trump’s speech that President Joe Biden would agree with. In another America, they would be collegial members of the Presidents Club, bonding over memories of how they overcame their thorniest challenges. “Biden sounded like he’s ready to go toe to toe with former President Donald Trump and win in November. Paul Sracic noted that Biden lost White voters without college degrees by 35 points in 2020.

That helped India expand at a forecast-beating 7.6%, making it one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. It has been driven by rising incomes for many Indians, a severe housing shortage in big cities and strong population growth. Builders are bullish long-term with many saying the boom could last two to three years and some even more optimistic. "The housing market could continue to perform well for another three to four years," Sanjeev Jain, managing director at Parsvnath Developers, a leading real estate company, noting that India is in the initial stages of a housing growth cycle. The government is also trying to boost the availability of affordable housing by providing subsidies, which is encouraging construction in India's smaller towns and cities.

[1/2] A crane moves past police officers and rescue team members outside a tunnel where 40 road workers are trapped after a portion of the tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi in the northern state of Uttarakhand, India, November 15, 2023. Rescue efforts have been focused on drilling through the fallen rock to create space for a pipe that can be used to pull the men to safety. Work would begin shortly to cover the 60 metres distance to reach the men, said Devendra Singh Patwal, a state disaster management official. Since the tunnel collapsed, the trapped men have been supplied with food, water and oxygen via a pipe and they are in contact with rescuers via walkie-talkies. British fintech firm Wise nearly quadrupled pre-tax profits in its half-year results out on Tuesday, citing a boost from higher interest rates. Including interest income, the company's total income stood at £656 million for the period, up 58% year-on-year. Wise said that it benefited from higher interest rates, extending a trend from earlier this year where the company was pulling in extra income thanks to interest rate increases. The analysts added that the boost to Wise's results from higher interest income is a "welcome temporary compensation" for slowing core total processed volume, but noted it is "likely unsustainable." Harsh Sinha, Wise's technology chief, recently took the reins from Wise CEO Kristo Kaarmann at the firm's helm.

The country's leaders have been optimistic about its path to net zero, making bold claims that 50% of its power generation will come from renewables by 2030, and 100% by 2070. "This heightened power demand necessitates a reliable, cost-effective, and consistent power generation source, which coal currently fulfills," he highlighted. Nearly 10% of the country's electricity demand comes from space cooling and this will increase ninefold by 2050, the IEA said. Unreliable renewablesDespite being able to produce cheap wind and solar energy, only 22% of India's power generation is met by renewables. These complexities render it challenging to rely solely on renewables for consistent and dependable power generation," Narayan said.

RAW Chief Ravi Sinha, the only serving official publicly affiliated with the agency, did not return messages seeking comment. All six officials denied that RAW engages in targeted killings, noting that the agency has no mandate for such operations. Fallout from the Vancouver incident has also raised concerns that RAW will come under greater global monitoring, Indian intelligence officials and analysts said. "The current developments have undoubtedly increased global curiosity about RAW," said Dheeraj Paramesha Chaya, an expert on Indian intelligence at Britain's Hull University. "Our footprint is growing in parts of the world which were not important earlier," a recently retired senior RAW official said, without providing specifics.
